Because of its wonderful people, intact Chinese culture, amazing food and beautiful mountain scenery, I have a soft spot for Taiwan.  I liked it so much that I returned in August 2001.  Although the weather varies between hot and humid and cold and damp; the architecture in the cities is a nightmare and the traffic and pollution are truly world-class in their awfulness, there is much charm in this open and dynamic Chinese society.  This connection to the past and prospects for the future are everywhere.
