Hangzhou was capital of the Southern Song Dynasty(南宋代, app 800 - 1100 AD).  Although almost new buildings survive from that time, the city is famous for its beautiful "West Lake" (西湖), temples and mountain scenery.  Although it can be very touristy at times, it is still one of the prettiest places in China
